Photographing the Landscape in the Cairngorms
Photographing the Cairngorms is as much about patience and awareness as it is about location. The landscape doesn’t reveal itself all at once — it unfolds gradually, often in subtle ways, shaped by weather, light, and time spent simply being there.
One of the defining qualities of the Cairngorms is their scale. From the high, exposed plateaus to the quieter glens and forests below, there’s a constant balance between wide, expansive scenes and more intimate details. It encourages a flexible approach — sometimes working with sweeping views and distant ridgelines, and at other times focusing on texture, light, and smaller compositions within the landscape.
Light plays a central role here. It rarely stays consistent for long. Clouds move quickly, mist forms and clears without warning, and brief breaks in the weather can transform an ordinary scene into something far more atmospheric.
